How to Easily DIY Your Website Using Wix

Creating a bespoke website doesn’t need to be difficult; in fact, you can easily DIY your website using Wix without knowing a single piece of coding (who even uses coding these days?!)

Quick story time:

I started my Virtual Assistant business online, mostly because I didn’t want to fork out for a whole website when I was just getting started.

You know how it is when you’re not making anything, the initial outlay seems like a lot!

Anyway, it took me a while to finally decide to create my website. Credit goes to my coach at the time, who gave me the nudge I needed.

Cue major procrastination over which web builder to use, there is a LOT of info out there!

If you’re reading this and also struggling to decide, check out this blog I wrote explaining why I believe Wix is the best option for small business owners.

With very little web design experience, I successfully managed to DIY my website using Wix, and since then, I’ve never looked back!

Here’s how you can easily DIY your website using Wix:

  1. Start By Researching Other Websites in Your Industry

There seems to be a tendency to think you can’t look around for inspiration.

What you don’t want to do is copy and paste someone else’s design; that wouldn’t be cool.

Plus, what’s the point of having your very own little corner of the internet if you’re not going to show off your personality?

It’s difficult to start from zero, which is why a little market research goes a long way.

Here’s what to do:

Google your niche/industry and spend some time looking at existing websites.

Take notes about the features that catch your eye.

Likewise, take notes about the elements that put you off.

Jot down any aspects that are unique to the business owner, too.

That will give you a basis to work from rather than starting from scratch.

  1. Easily DIY Your Website Using Wix’s Templates Collection

Now, have in mind your likes and dislikes from the previous step.

Wix has a huge collection of templates that you can use, and more importantly, customise to your preferences.

There is no need to start from a completely blank canvas; someone else has very kindly developed a range of templates that you can use when DIYing your website. Hallelujah!

A word of caution: Don’t get lost down a rabbit hole of templates.

There are lots to choose from, which is why it’s important to tell Wix about your website, and it will help you narrow it down. Yay!

Something to remember about Wix.

It is a web builder that is "generic" and incorporates lots of features and functionality so that each business owner who wants to design a website can do so using the many features available.

Choosing a template that closely matches your needs is much better than using one with features that you don't need.

You'll just waste time removing pages and functions that you don't want or need.

  1. Customise Your Chosen Templates in Wix Editor

First of all, let me clarify that as a small business owner, you should use Wix Editor rather than Wix Studio.

I recently got a little seduced by Wix Studio, thinking that it would give me more flexibility and design features; however, after doing a little research and playing around with it, I quickly realised that it’s not necessary.

Wix Editor is the perfect platform for small business owners as it is very easy to use and lets you fully customise the templates provided.

Taking advantage of a ready-made template is perfect if you need a base from which to start.

It’s often easier to adapt something if you can already see the initial layout rather than trying to work from a blank screen.

If you’ve never worked with Wix, I have a Wix Website Tutorial, ideal for beginners looking to get started. You can access the tutorial here.

This is where the fun begins!

You can bring all your branding together to create a cohesive and appealing website that is packed full of your personality.

Now you know how to easily DIY your website using Wix, will you start designing your website?

Before starting, here's what you need to remember:

Do your market research to better understand your needs, likes and dislikes.

Choose a template that is fit for purpose, allowing you to showcase your services/products in a way that makes sense.

Finally, customise your chosen template to reflect your branding and personality throughout your website.
