Conclusion to “Are Wix Websites Really THAT bad?”
Somebody said to me recently, “Wix websites are garbage”
Wow, that’s quite a bold statement.
I was also slightly offended since I have a Wix website, which of course got me thinking, are Wix websites really THAT bad?
Like anything, it depends on your needs, perspective and experiences.
By the way, the person who said the above comment is married to a web developer, so make of that what you will.
Let’s dive in and see if we can figure out if a Wix website really is THAT bad.
What Is A Wix Website?
First of all, let me explain how Wix works.
Wix is a website builder that allows you to create a website from scratch without the need for any prior experience or knowledge of code.
Think Canva for websites, and let me tell you, I blummin’ love Canva!
Wix allows you to choose a template for your website, and customise it with your brand colours, fonts, logo etc
Then, all you need to do is simply drag and drop any of the elements you want to use onto the template, such as bodies of text, images, links to social platforms, sign-up forms, you name it and you can pretty much find it.
How Does Wix Differ From Other Web Builders?
The simplicity.
It is very easy to create a website with Wix as it is very user-friendly.
You don’t need to spend hours figuring out how it works before you even start creating your website due to its straightforward interface and drag and drop options.
Another advantage is Wix is a one-stop shop.
Included in your package you’ll get web hosting, which is fantastic as it’s one less thing to worry about while creating your website.
You will get a custom domain name included too which is usually free for the first year.
There is also the option to create a custom email address which is a great bonus.
What I like most of all is that I don’t need to add a million plugins or apps to develop my website since they’re already built in.
I almost forgot! Wix usually reduces their prices by half every Tuesday!
So, What Are The Alternatives?
In an effort not to be biased, since I use a Wix website, I wanted to highlight some of the alternatives available.
WordPress
WordPress is pretty much the gold standard of web building.
(See, this is me being impartial and matter of fact.)
It has a lot of capabilities and plenty of plug-in options so that you can develop and enhance your website as you grow.
Shopify
This is an excellent option if you have a shop and if you will be selling products online
Squarespace, GoDaddy, Ionis
I’ve lumped these together because I don’t want to repeat myself for each site.
All of them are very similar to Wix and offer drag and drop capabilities and similar features throughout.
To be honest, it will come down to pricing and personal preference when choosing between these alternative options.
Is a Wix Website The Right Fit For You?
Here are my thoughts on whether a Wix website is right for you.
If you are a small business owner who would like more online presence but has gotten bogged down with information overload and the many options available, then I’d say Wix could be a great choice.
Remember, you are not trying to reinvent the wheel or compete with Microsoft, you are creating your unique space in the online world.
My advice is to keep your website simple and easy to navigate, which can be easily achieved using Wix’s templates.
Keep your site to around 4-5 pages, a landing home page, an about me page, a page dedicated to your products and services, a contact page and then perhaps a blog or a page to promote a freebie offer.
Wix gives you the option to add a blog or create a newsletter should you wish once you get more established, both are great assets for your business.
Let me say it again, keep it simple!
Are Wix Websites Really THAT bad?
In short, no.
I truly believe that having a website is a huge positive for your business. In my experience, it provides a sense of professionalism and acts as a guide and base to develop your services.
If you want an all-singing, all-dancing website with huge capabilities then Wix is probably not for you.
But, if you want your own little corner of the internet where you can showcase your business, something that looks good, is easy to navigate and allows you to show your personality, then Wix is the one.
So no, Wix websites aren’t that bad and don’t let anyone shame you into believing that you need the best of the best to boost your online presence.
There's no time like the present to start creating your website, but believe me, I get that it can be overwhelming. So if you'd like some guidance please feel free to drop me a message.
